We’re under a tornado watch, and all Fingertip can think to do is dress code people who are so hot they can barely function. It is ninety-seven degrees in the shade, and the air is so sticky you could catch flies with it, but shoulders are going to take down the world. They’re not the only ones—the belly girls, the too-much-thigh girls, the bra-strap girls—they’re all getting it today.

Navya got called out of Spanish class. Now she’s crying in the bathroom, because she missed test review and she’s already practically failing Spanish. Navya is also petrified of tornadoes.

“I think I’m having a panic attack,” she says, bending over to try to catch her breath.

Two seventh graders are vaping in the corner and staring at us as I wet a bunch of paper towels with cold water and press them against the back of her neck. “I’ll find somebody who has good notes, and we can meet after school. It’s okay. We’ll handle it.”

Our phones all make beeping sounds. I pull mine out of my backpack.
